Banana mango

Sometimes nature displays funny variations of a well-known theme. How about a u-shaped banana mango (Mangifera indica, Kiao savoy, Anacardiaceae) decorated with a male fighting beetle (Xylotrupes gideon, Scarabaeidae)? The fruit looks like a gigantic cashew. Unseen in this picture is a blackish crust at the bottom of the u. The shape was probably caused by insects sucking the left side of the growing fruit primordium (where the crust is), causing cell death in one area while the other cells kept growing, bending the whole fruit.

I’ve eaten many things, but when the brother in law offered me grilled fighting beatle I had to pass. Maybe the above foto will inspire the cooks amongst us to combine the two?
Interesting to see how the bug has affected the fruit. I dont think i’d want to take David up on his suggestion of eating the two though!
