To make gold

February 27, 2012

Dendrobium fimbriatum var. oculatum (Orchidaceae) is a golden orchid with a brown blotch and a fimbriated lip. It is currrently in blossom at Dokmai Garden in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand. Native to the dry monsoon forests of northern Thailand it can be grown in your Chiang Mai garden. It may eventually grow really big with hundreds of blossom like the one at Dokmai Garden.

Other native Thai orchids currently in blossom at Dokmai Garden are:

Acriopsis indica

Coelogyna flaccida

Coelogyne flavida

Coelogyne virescens

Dendrobium albosanguineum

Dendrobium compactum

Dendrobium ellipsophyllum

Dendrobium farmeri

Dendrobium pulchellum

Dendrobium secundum

Dendrobium signatum

Hygrochilus parishii var. marriottianus

Papilionanthe teres

Phalaenopsis gibbosa

Pomatocalpa spicatum

Vanda coerulescens

Vanda liouvillei

In evening sun filtered through the Chiang Mai smog clouds the flower of Dendrobium fimbriatum var. oculatum looks really golden. It has a faint fragrance of lemon and so ‘golden lemon orchid’ could be a vernacular name in English.
