Cow nipples

February 16, 2012

According to Ricky Ward ‘nom oa’ is northern Thai for ‘cow nipples’ (Polyalthia viridis, Annonaceae). When we visited Mae Kanin Tai recently we saw a tall leggy tree with leaves resembling a dipterocarp. Instead of the winged dipterocarp fruits we saw red wingless fruits in bundles, and on the ground were typical fruits of the ‘cow nipples’. We are not aware of any poisonous fruit of the Annonaceae family and so Ricky bravely tried one. The stone is large and the pulp is not that fantastic. We try to grow it at Dokmai Garden where we have a small sapling.

An edible fruit now ripening in the Chiang Mai jungles.
