A new butterfly to Dokmai Garden

December 14, 2011

This early morning at 05.30 it was 15.4 °C. Cold! The silver pheasant descended from his tree at 06.34. That is the definition of mid morning.

Yesterday we had the privilege of receiving British guests who found a butterfly new to Dokmai Garden: the yam fly (Loxura atymnus, Lycaenidae). Its larva is not restricted to yam (Dioscorea), but it can also feed on paper mulberry (Broussonetia spp).

I’ve seen a lot of butterflies during my many visits to Thailand, but I don’t recall ever running into this beauty.
