Sowing vegetables in the tropics

June 11, 2011

If you sow your vegetable seeds in the nursery you do have full control of germination and protect the seedlings from birds and burning sun, but you may have difficulties in transplanting them to the field as they are not prepared for the sun, and it is a time consuming extra step. Another option is to sow the seeds straight into a well prepared soil (drained and compost rich). Then you should cover the surface with straw, to shade a bit against the sun, hide them from birds and to reduce water losses when the sun shines. If you have ducks or guinea fowl, you may have to put up a fence afterwards.
