Is there any nature society in Chiang Mai?

May 25, 2011

At Dokmai Garden’s jungle excursion to Chiang Rai we discussed the need to share the experts’ field knowledge about the Thai nature with youngsters, city citizens and newcomers. Field-oriented clubs and societies devoted at education and protection of nature are common in the west, improving the quality of life for all citizens.

Apart from the Chiang Mai bird watchers we were not aware of any organized form of nature club in Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai provinces. Do you know about any Thai, English or multinational society aimed at field studies of plants and/or animals? Kindly send contact details and links if you do, so we can spread the information. Until then, we keep organizing lectures and excursions at Dokmai Garden.

At one place in the forest we discovered illegal logging of Dipterocarpus obtusifolius, something which made the participants very upset. Branches with orchids were left on the ground where they will meet a certain death. To save the orchids from death on the ground is illegal too, but Dokmai Garden’s Orchid Ark is trying to convince Thai politicians and officials about the need for a salvation picking permit.
