More Dendrobium orchids in blossom

February 27, 2011

The hot season has begun. That means wild flowers, including orchids.

The hottest and driest corner of Dokmai Garden is in the monsoon woodland. One of the longan trees there has been adorned with the native Dendrobium primulinum (Orchidaceae). Totally leaf-less, the long pseudobulbs now produce pink and white blossom. We have another variety of the same species, which is normally found in Esan, the northeast of Thailand. This is the area from which the Seehamongkol family comes. This variety has a yellow blotch on the lip, and flowers later.

Another Thai orchid currently in blossom at Dokmai Garden is Dendrobium lituiflorum. It has somewhat more vivid colours, and a funnel-shaped lip.
