The fruits of Uvaria grandiflora
Uvaria grandiflora (Annonaceae) is a fantastic climber from the south of Thailand. The starfish-like flowers come in red and cream colours, and both forms grow in front of Dokmai Garden’s entrance building.
Many visitors have remarked they have never seen it anywhere, and many people who live here in town would like to buy it. Unfortunately we have failed to propagate it vegetatively, but as you can see from the picture below, this year we got fruits! If the seeds are viable we should be happy to enrich the Chiang Mai gardens with another gem of the native jungles.
