A Chiang Mai weed

January 16, 2011

After long discussions and many suggestions, we have concluded this weed is the artillery-plant (Pilea microphylla, Urticaceae). It is called artillery-plant because it can shoot the seed. There are many much larger-leaved species native to Asia, but this one is introduced from South America, like so many other weeds in Thailand. In Chiang Mai you mostly see this plant in flowering pots in shady and moist nurseries. It is in blossom right now at Dokmai Garden, but to see the flowers you may need a dissecting microscope.
