Beware of the lily borer!

December 30, 2010

These days the Chiang Mai gardener must keep an eye on any lily-like plant of the Amaryllidaceae family (e.g. Crinum, Hippeastrum, Zephyranthes and Amaryllis).

The reason is that the black and white larva of the lily borer (Brithys crini, Noctuidae) is active. Not only does it engulf the leaves of your lily, but it bores into the plant and may kill it. The process is very rapid, so a few days of neglect and the plant is dead.

This moth is known from the Mediterranean, Africa, Japan and Australia.

At Dokmai Garden we simply kill it by hand. Do not relax after one raid, keep monitoring for a few days in a row.
