Metallic blue fruits

December 12, 2010

I have seen a low herbaceous understorey plant with long leaves in an evergreen riverine forest  in northern Thailand (Opkhan national park in Chiang Mai). It seems to spread with runners trailing on the ground. The fruits the size of ovoid peppercorns are metallic blue and clustered in the top. After consulting experts we conclude this is Pollia thyrsiflora (Commelinaceae). Maybe it will be available in the future as a garden ornamental?
