A variegated banana

October 20, 2010
tags: ,

The rarest banana at Dokmai Garden is a variegated pacific plantain (cooking banana). In its homeland Hawaii it is sacred and called ‘Manini’, ‘Koae’ or ‘Aeae’. In Thailand, it is still a very rare banana. Its highly decorative leaves are a bit sensitive to the sun, so a protected site is recommended. Like all bananas, it prefers thick mulch and extra nutrients. If you wish to see the variegated fruits, simply drop by at Dokmai Garden in Chiang Mai.
