A pink ground orchid in blossom

October 19, 2010

Habenaria carnea (Orchidaceae) is unusual in many ways. It has long-lived pink flowers, and leaves with ornamental silvery spots. Unlike so many other ornamental Thai orchids, this one is a ground orchid. It is native to Thailand and Malaysia. You can admire it at Dokmai Garden, Chiang Mai, where it is a part of the Corien and Folbert Bronsema Orchid donation.

This lovely orchid is a typical monsoon plant, demanding a drought or it will rot and die.
