Another October orchid

October 18, 2010

A ground orchid currently in blossom at Dokmai Garden is Spathoglottis affinis (=S. lobbii). It is native to all provinces in Thailand, and grows in wet and sunny areas. Since this is such a widespread species, there are many populations with somewhat different morphology. The red streaks on the yellow petals can be more or less pronounced. Before the orchid forms the flowers, you only see the inconspicuous grassy leaves. At Dokmai Garden we grow this species in a pot.

Spathoglottis affinis belongs to the Corien and Folbert Bronsema Orchid donation.
