Willy Wonka’s Chewing Gum exists for real!

From now and until Christmas time, you will be able to taste the hog plums (Spondias pinnata, Anacardiaceae). This is a native Thai fruit resembling quail eggs in shape and appearance. It smells nicely of apricots, but when you take your first bite you will feel disappointed. It is astringent and sour – for one or two seconds. Then the train of flavours launches, and for several minutes different aromas degrade in your mouth, and each new compund has a new flavour.

If you ever read the book ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ by Roald Dahl, you will remember there is a fantastic chewing gum created by Willy Wonka. This chewing gum contains a complete meal, changing flavours over time. Well, if you wish to try the real thing, come to Chiang Mai this time of the year. We have two trees at Dokmai Garden, but they are still too young for fruit production, but the nearby Hang Dong market have them for sale. Ask the vendors for ‘ma kok’.
