Dendrobium hercoglossum – a native orchid in blossom

July 8, 2010

In Chiang Mai in northern Thailand there are different orchids in blossom all year round. This morning the Thai Dendrobium hercoglossum opened its flowers here at Dokmai Garden. It is a bit late, but the rainy season this year was delayed 4-6 weeks. This epiphytic orchid demands water in the rainy season, but should be left alone in the dry season. Young flowers have not yet developed the  purple colours,  but they are still cute in their baby-blue. The dark purple operculum and the pointed lip are still characteristic.
