Plants in our sales nursery – Crinum asiaticum ‘purple’

June 26, 2010

Crinum asiaticum (Amaryllidaceae) comes in two colours: the original white and the ‘Purple Selection’. Here at Dokmai Garden in Chiang Mai (northern Thailand) we grow both colour varieties, and we keep both for sale in our nursery. The ‘Giant Crinum’ is native to Southeast Asia and can indeed reach gigantic proportions, 2 meters or more. The flowers have a faint fragrance, which is most appealing when you let your head dive into the petals. Being a native makes it tolerant of seasonally dry and wet conditions. This is a plant you can leave without fear, it is strong enough to look after itself.
