Pick some Thai Mushrooms!

May 22, 2010

The mushroom season has started north of town where the rains have been sufficient. Here, we still wait for more regular and abundant rain to be able to pick mushrooms. A problem in Thailand has been the difficulties in finding a mushroom book. Luckily, there is one now: “Diversity of mushrooms and macrofungi in Thailand” (2008) by Chandrasikul, Suwanarit, Sangwanit, Morinaga, Nishizawa and Murakami. The descriptive texts are in Thai and English. The book can be ordered from the Kasetsart University in Bangkok, or you can buy it straight from Dokmai Garden.

As to edible mushrooms, please remember that your rules of thumb from your home country may not apply here, so be careful. The best way of learning mushrooms or any other organism group is to learn from somebody who knows. The book is needed for your memory. If you wish to join the Chiangmai Mycological Society (no membership fees, just an informal group of enthusiasts), please send us a note.

Soon to be in Chiang Mai. Looking forward to exploring fungal biodiversity there.
