Vanilla in your garden II

April 19, 2010

This is just an update to let you know how the vanilla pollinations turned out. Of the four flowers, I pollinated three by hand. The result was one fruit only. It seems that you need to rip the flower to really smear the pollen along the stigma, a gentle hand won’t do the trick. Below is the picture of the fruit three weeks after blossom. It should not be harvested until it just starts opening, which in the case of orchids may take many months. I keep you updated about its progress.
