The Sapphire Head

April 14, 2010

The Sapphire Head, or Blue-Crested Lizard (Calotes mystaceus) is currently displaying its vibrant blue head at Dokmai Garden. To further emphasise what a distinguished being he is, he has the white moustache of a gentleman. You will only see these blue colours now in the hot season. Being constantly chased by cats and snakes, it is a very alert reptile. His sleepy eyes are just to trick you, he will run around the trunk, keeping ugly humans out of sight. At Dokmai Garden he is a part of the garden crew, specialised on pest management. His fellow gardeners call this Agamid “kinka”, and they think he is very tasty, but within the boundaries of the garden the Sapphire Head is protected.
