A wolf in a sheep’s clothes

March 27, 2010

This morning when I took a shower, my shoulder touched a leaf of an Angel wing (Angiopteris evecta). Soon after that I could sense a creepy crawler on my shoulder, I looked down and there was a small black ant. I raised my hand to wipe it off, but there was something peculiar about this ant. I looked closer – it was a praying mantis, disguised as an ant! It was glossy jet black and the same size as a small black ant, but it had the front legs folded in the praying mantis position, the head was the typical cylinder with gigantic eyes, and the antennae were straight, fine, and moved constantly. Amazing! I am so happy we live far from the pesticide clouds. This little guy made my day. His name is Myrmecomantis atra, the Ant Mantis.

I’ve just found one on a bush outside of our house in Canberra. They are very ant-like. Great post
